AvaTax
Avalara AvaTax + QuickBooks Online — connected on this tenant (sandbox)
AvaTax calculates tax on every invoice and estimate; QuickBooks Online is the accounting ledger of record. Both providers are wired against their sandbox environments — the integration is real, with mutation gates in place for demo safety. Jurisdictions, exemption certificates, taxability rules, and the calculation log below reflect the connected integration. The platform-native engine remains armed as the automatic fallback if AvaTax is unreachable.

AvaTax vs. platform-managed — diligence behind the choice
Why AvaTax was selected as the tax authority and platform-native was retained as the armed fallback for Flooring Studio's multi-state QuickBooks Online workflow.
| Decision Area | Platform-Managed Rules | Avalara AvaTax Automation |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Small state footprint, low exemption volume, stable rates. | 10-15 state footprint, filing obligations, certificates, and frequent jurisdiction checks. |
| Upside | Lower vendor cost and direct control over simple tax rules. | Automated rate lookup, exemption handling, audit evidence, and cleaner QBO mapping. |
| Tradeoff | Flooring Studio owns rate updates, rule changes, edge cases, and filing exposure. | Subscription cost, implementation mapping, and reconciliation process still need ownership. |
| Live posture | Armed fallback behind AvaTax for timeouts, unmapped tax codes, or narrow-jurisdiction exception handling. Every fallback is audit-logged. | Active provider — calculating, committing, voiding, and filing on Flooring Studio's behalf today. |
